Live golf tournament coverage is trash – there isn’t any other way to describe it. Not many people are into watching golf all through the tournament Thursday-Sunday. But the inability to pick it up and watch whenever the tournament is going is a huge hindrance to trying to grow the game of golf. If people can’t watch live golf tournaments then how do you expect people to even care about the sport?(now whether golf is a game or a sport is an interesting topic. A lot of people stop playing golf because frankly, it’s just too difficult. I myself think why do I keep playing this game if it’s so damn hard. Being able to watch pros make the game of golf look easy is one of the reasons people keep going out to play. If that guy/women can do it, why can’t I?
Now I know many of you might be asking, “well isn’t there a Golf Channel”? There certainly is, but it isn’t always showing live tournament. In fact, most of the time its showing golf talk shows or re runs of older tournaments. Golf tournaments usually run from Thursday-Sunday so it’s no surprise the other days don’t have live tournaments; because there aren’t any during that time! But during the tournaments it can be hard to find any live coverage at times. Typically during the Thursday/Friday rounds you can find coverage late at night that isn’t live but was from the same day – similar to how the Olympics does it – which we can all agree is hot trash. You can usually only reliably find live coverage for golf when it is a major tournament – and it can still be hard during that! How can you expect people to get into golf when the public can’t easily watch the biggest tournaments of the year?
There are many reasons golf is a dying sport right now (though with covid it’s since a nice boost since its one of outdoors things you can do) – but if the PGA and main golf associations want to help stop the decline in players, an easy remedy would be to get their fans easy access to live tournaments year round.
